The Growth of Artificial Intelligence and Its Environmental Impact

Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are evolving at an exponential rate, transforming how we live, work, and interact with one another. However, this rapid growth of AI has significant environmental consequences, particularly in terms of electricity, water, and land consumption.

AI Data Centers' Electricity Consumption to Triple by 2030

AI-powered data centers are expected to consume 945 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity annually by 2030. This figure is nearly three times the combined annual consumption of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nigeria, which together host over 650 million people. The surge in electricity demand is primarily driven by the need to process and store massive amounts of data for training and operating AI models.
