A team from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has developed a revolutionary measurement system to assess the potential dangers posed by volcanoes. This system uses autonomous drones to measure the gases emitted by volcanoes, providing a better understanding of the precursors to eruptions.
Drones and Detection Technology
The researchers use laser beams that pass through gas clouds and are reflected by the drones. An algorithm then processes the reflected signals to generate a map showing gas concentrations, including high levels of carbon dioxide. The ratio between carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide is an important indicator of imminent eruptions.
